Ariane Lourie Harrison & Seth Harrison, Harrison Atelier, Species Niches
In June 2014, Brooklyn-based design firm, Harrison Atelier, created a pavilion that is an undulating canopy of networked spaces sited at the edge of the forest and field in Art Omi: Architecture's rolling landscape in Field 01. The pavilion's design draws inspiration from the structural logic of the "reciprocal frame:" no single hierarchy governs the network of the one thousand, local-sourced oak structural members; rather, the geometries of the design are interdependent and interwoven.
Species Niches opened with a site-specific performance choreographed by Silas Riener, performed by Riener, Rashaun Mitchell and Cori Kresge, and composed by Loren Dempster. A second performance in October was choreographed by James McGinn and composed by Loren Dempster.
Harrison Atelier was founded in 2009 by Seth Harrison, a writer, designer and biotechnologist, and Ariane Lourie Harrison, an architect and educator at the Yale School of Architecture. Past Harrison Atelier performance-installations include Anchises, at Pavilion Dance in Bournemouth, UK, Arnolfini Theater in Bristol, UK, and Abrons Arts Center in NYC, in 2010; Pharmacophore, at the Storefront for Art and Architecture in NYC in 2011; and Veal, at The Invisible Dog in Brooklyn in 2013.
