Celebrate with us! On Saturday, October 11 from 3-5:30 PM Eddie Rodolfo Aparicio premieres Invernadero herido (para Huerta) [Wounded greenhouse (for Huerta)](2025),the artist’s first outdoor installation on the East Coast, commissioned by Art Omi.
The opening will feature a special performance by baile funk star DJ K whose sounds are described by Pitchfork as “a decade’s worth of dance music scenes crammed into a blender: The pounding beats are somewhere between South African gqom, Jersey club, European hardstyle, and the kind of distorted, sped-up 'phonk' music you hear in Russian street drifting compilations.”
Aparicio's Invernadero herido (para Huerta) is centered around the Wardian case, a nineteenth-century device of colonial extraction that was used to transport living plants from Central and South America to collectors in Europe and the United States.
Through this project, Aparicio examines colonial histories of materials linked to pre-Hispanic cultures in Central America, particularly his family’s homeland of El Salvador, continuing his exploration of migration, and entanglements between human and nonhuman histories and lives.
DJ K, known as “bruxo” or the wizard, likens his production style to witchcraft, sampling Arabic chants, crushing kicks, and saturated textures that leave mixes red-hot. A key player in the new wave of funk mandelão that fills São Paulo's favela dances, this performance marks his premiere in New York.
Free. RSVP essential.
