Arts Integration in Schools
At Art Omi, every brushstroke, cardboard creature, and clay shape is an act of imagination and communication — and we believe that everyone deserves access to that opportunity. In recent years, we saw that the demand for creative education had grown beyond the capacity of our popular Camp Omi and weekly Saturday Art Workshops. How could we make art education accessible to more children in our community? By working together with teachers.
In 2019, we launched Arts Integration in Schools, the work our teaching artists are doing in classrooms across all six public schools in the Columbia County School District to provide professional development to educators that enriches New York State core curriculum in math, science, ELA, and social studies through the arts. Last year, Art Omi served 64 teachers and 324 students through on and off-site workshops, curriculum coaching, and collaborative lesson planning with a focus on arts-based strategies. We help K-12 teachers explore how arts integration can develop social-emotional competencies like self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, responsible decision-making, and relationship skills.
Led by Art Omi’s Education Director, Sasha Sicurella, our amazing team includes Dr. Lisa Donovan and Thomas Lee, professionals in the field who are passionate about innovative research on the impact of arts integration and visual literacy. A highlight for us is to witness each teacher’s confidence grow as they learn new strategies and become empowered to implement them in the classroom with their own students. This speaks so strongly to the sustainability of this work, knowing that these public school educators have developed creative habits that they will continue to impart to children year after year.
If you would like to directly support public education in Columbia and Berkshire Counties, contributing to our Arts Integration in Schools program is a truly meaningful way to help, and Art Omi would be very grateful to have your support!
Art Omi’s programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
Additional support for Art Omi’s education programs is provided in part by Susan & Harry Newton, the Robert Lehman Foundation, Stephanie Lazar and David Newman, and Sherri Greenbach & David Goldstein. Our Education Fund is made possible by the collective generosity of our larger community; if you would like to designate a gift to our Art Omi: Education, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
