Margi Cole (United States)
founder and Artistic Director of The Dance COLEctive, received a BA in dance from Columbia College Chicago and an MFA in dance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has taught for several educational and professional organizations nationally and internationally and performed with many well-known choreographers and companies. In 2011, Cole participated in the Deborah Hay Solo Commissioning Project. Margi has received two Illinois Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowships, a 2005 Chicago Dancemakers Forum Lab Artist Award, two Individual Arts Program Creative Project Grants from Chicago’s DCASE and an American Marshall Memorial Fellowship. Active in the Chicago dance community, she has served as a Chicago Dancemakers Forum Consortium Member, on grant panels, in public forums and is on the board of SeeChicagoDance. Cole is on faculty at Columbia College Chicago, where she has served as a Lecturer and Associate Chair and is currently the Series Program Manager of the Dance Center Presenting Series.
Ryuichi Fujimura (Australia)
is a dance artist based in Sydney, Australia. He was born and raised in Japan, but migrated to Australia as an adult. Soon after moving to Australia, he discovered the joy of dancing when he stumbled across a poster of lunchtime dance classes in the mid 1990’s. Since then, he has studied contemporary dance technique as well as improvisation and choreography in Australia and overseas. For the last 15 years, Ryuichi has collaborated with both emerging and established international and Australian artists in various dance, theatre, opera, site-specific performance and film projects. He began his choreographic practice in 2013. He has created two site-specific performance works in collaboration with Kate Sherman and two autobiographical solos. Most recently, he toured to Finland to perform his solos in November 2017. He is scheduled to bring the same work to Taiwan in November this year.
Yunkyung Hur (South Korea)
is a choreographer, dancer, performing artist who has been working on diverse performances. Her works show interest in the existence of body as perspective within various contexts, and as a starting point of any diverse possibilities of theatrical language. Graduated Department of Media Communication, Yonsei University, School of Social Sciences, and M.F.A at the Department of Choreography, Korea National University of Arts, School of Dance, She performed in most of her own choreographed work such as (2018, Pinkfactory Residency Exhibition), (2016-2017, ARKO Arts Academy), (2017), (2015), (2014-2015). She recently co-created and performed in a collaboration piece of SIDance 2017. Recent works as performer are (2017), (2017), (2017), (2016) and many more, which include various works of artists from diverse fields.
Amanda Krische (United States)
is a choreographer and movement artist based in New York City. She has performed in such venues as John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Place des Arts, YoungArts Foundation Backyard Ball, New York Live Arts, Danspace and Joyce Theater. She is a graduate of LaGuardia High School for Music & Art and the Performing Arts and graduated summa cum laude from Purchase College, SUNY with a BFA in Dance. Supplementary training includes Springboard Danse Montreal and a semester abroad at Amsterdam Hoogeschool voor de Kunsten. While at Purchase College, SUNY she began her research of dance making under the mentorship of Doug Varone. She can be seen in the video for the Khirma x Swarovski capsule collection, as well as Xenia Ghali’s music video for “Places”. She has been a company member of Loni Landon Dance Project, Nicole von Arx & Guests, and Bodystories: Teresa Fellion Dance. Her choreography has been shown in such venues as LaGuardia High School, Dance Theater Lab at Purchase College, SUNY, John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Gallim Dance, Actors Arts Fund, and Ailey Citigroup Theater. She has been commissioned by Bombshell Dance Project and the National YoungArts Foundation. Amanda is the 2016 recipient of the prestigious Bert Terborgh Award, a 2012 YoungArts Winner, a 2018 Art Omi Fellow, and a United States Presidential Scholar in the Arts.
Chiharu Mamiya (Japan)
Born in Japan, after assiduous classical ballet training she moved in France in 1996 to explore more in dance world. As a dancer/choreographer, she has been working in France and in Europe and collaborating with artists from different horizons such as contemporary circus, theatre and music (Kubilaï Khan Investigations, Gilles Jobin, Nicole Seiler, Cirque Anomalie, Catherina Sagna, Jörg Müller, François Verret…) and developed her taste of trans-diciplinarity. Since her solo Yamima in 2011, how to relate people through artistic action is the core of her research, by giving and counter giving the creativity. She is interested in poetic expressions, which take shape between fragility and plasticity of human being, especially in natural environment. She has opened her company ELBISSOP in south of France in 2014 and developed her own style of dance collaboration with different art.
Jean-Baptiste Matondo (France)
After more than 15 years of dancing b-boying at an international level; such as the Battle of the Year in 2015 and various works choreographed by leading professionals such as "Love Stories" choreographed by Yaman Okur or the latest creation "KATA" Anne Nguyen, Jean-Baptiste Matondo wishes in turn to propose modern compositions, drawing inspiration from the great stories that have governed our world. In parallel, he is a professional of garment. In 2007, he obtained his Designer's Diploma of the Garment, and then in 2011, he obtained his Master's Degree in Management and Fashion Product Development. He has become a freelance fashion designer which has him creating theatrical costumes for dance companies. He works for several brands of ready-to-wear clothing and he is currently creating his own models.
Katrin Schafitel (Germany)
Since 1999, Katrin Schafitel has been the most prominent actor in the independent dance scene of Munich. With her rich personality and her strong character, she has worked and collaborated with different choreographers and directors like Rosemary Butcher, Romeo Castellucci, Achim Freyer, Amir Hosseinpour, Anna Konjetzky, Andreas Kriegenburg, Sunil Shankar and Katja Wachter. She performs at the Bavarian State Opera, and has been seen at national theaters and international festivals such as Festival Rencontres Essonne Danse (Paris), Festival Interplay (Turin), Amber Festival (Istanbul), DANCE (Munich), Nottdance Festival (Nottingham) or Biennale Karachi 2017 (Karachi). She brings charisma and expressive power to the stage, and at the same time shows aesthetic agility and sensible intelligence. Katrin Schafitel is interested in interfaces to dance, music and speech. Developing Compositions, where the resulting elements of sound, music and dance both face and question one another: Who or what is sound-body, music-body, dancing-body, resonance-body, instrument?
Babacar Top (Senegal)
is a Senegalese artist who began his dancing at a young age with Sabar in traditional ceremonies. His interests in storytelling through the body lead him to deepen is learning and seek out more African contemporary dance forms. Top was a company member with Compagnie Jant-Bi for four years. He has worked with Regine Chopinot, Robyn Orlin, Mark Tompkins, Kristie Simon, Rosangela Slivestre, Rachel Erdos and Ido Tadmor. In 2013, he performed Bolero with Maurice Bejart Ballet Lausanne. Top has worked in collaboration with the Association Kaay Fecc in Dakar, Senegal to develop programming that exposes young dancers to a variety of dance forms. He has taught and performed throughout the continent of Africa, Europe and the USA.
Sara Tolosa (Mexico)
Performer, choreographer and dance teacher. She has a Bachelor Degree in Contemporary Dance at the Faculty of Arts from the University of Sonora and a Diploma for participation in the Choreographic Composition Program. African Dance, improvisation, somatic movement, and Butoh Dance have influenced her to create and develop her own language of expression. She has collaborated and shown her work in Mexican dance companies and performed in national and international festivals like Cuba, New York and Costa Rica. In recent years, she has been invited as a choreographer to share and experiment with other choreographers in a project called “SolosLab Residence” in Mexico and a residence in Costa Rica collaborating as a performer in two pieces, final projects in Composition Choreographic Master in the National University Heredia, Costa Rica. She is currently researching and working at the University in Sonora as a teacher and still collaborating with other artists.
Robin Stiehm (United States)
has been a professional dance artist for over 40 years. Her early performance experience was with the Minnesota Dance Theatre and New Dance Ensemble, both of Minneapolis. Also in Minneapolis, she formed Dancing People Company, which she directed for 20 years, the last 12 years in Ashland, Oregon. With DPC, Robin presented her choreography and guest taught in Poland, Russia, Belarus, and Japan, as well many places in the USA. Robin's work received consistent support throughout her 40-year career from a variety of fellowships and foundations, both in Minnesota and Oregon. In addition to the many pieces she created for Dancing People Company, Robin has created pieces for Zenon Dance, Ballet Pacifica, the University of Minnesota, and ARENADance among others. Robin stepped down from her company in 2015 and is now living in Mazatlan, Mexico, where she is adjunct faculty at the Escuela Profesional de Danze de Mazatlan.
Gerard Van Dyck (Guest Mentor, Art Omi: Dance 2016, Australia)
is a dancer, actor, and educator. His performance experience includes contemporary dance, acting, slapstick, puppetry, motion capture, aerial performance, and illusion. He is Creative Director of KAGE, which he co-founded in 1997, and has contributed to and performed in KAGE’s award winning works across Australia and abroad. Gerard premiered his award winning solo THE COLLAPSIBLE MAN in 2001, and toured it to multiple venues across regional and metropolitan Australia. In 2015, Gerard presented his follow up solo work PICNIC which also toured across Australia. He has performed and toured extensively with BalletLab and Polyglot Theatre, and collaborated with artists Nat Cursio, Eleventh Hour Theatre, Clare Dyson, Legs on the Wall, desoxy Theatre and Sandra Parker. Gerard has choreographed and performed in music video clips, dance films and TV advertisements. He danced in a piano costume for Sarah Blasko and floated in a space ship for David Noonan. He has directed circus and comedy, and provided dramaturgy for ballet. Gerard is also a greatly sought after teacher across Melbourne, facilitating workshops in partnering skills, Pilates conditioning, acting for dancers, and body awareness for actors. Gerard’s other creative outlets include designing and building papercraft sculptures. In 2016 Gerard was thrilled to be awarded the residency at Art Omi: Dance, and feels immensely privileged to return as guest mentor with the 2018 residents.
