Art Omi Critic-in-Residence
Larry Ossei-Mensah is a Ghanaian-American independent curator and cultural critic who has documented contemporary cultural happenings for various publications including NeueJournal, Uptown and Whitewall Magazine. His writings have profiled some of the most dynamic visual artists working today—Derrick Adams, Mickalene Thomas, Kehinde Wiley, Lorna Simpson, Toyin Ojih Odutola, Yinka Shonibare and street artist JR.
As a curator, Ossei-Mensah uses contemporary art and culture as a vehicle to redefine how we see ourselves and the world around us. He has organized exhibitions at commercial and nonprofit galleries featuring a roster of critically acclaimed artists including Firelei Baez, ruby amanze, Hugo McCloud, Brendan Fernandes and Derek Fordjour to name a few. Ossei-Mensah is also the Co-Founder of ARTNOIR, a global collective of culturalists who design multimodal experiences aimed to engage this generation's dynamic and diverse creative class. ARTNOIR serves as a tangible extension of Ossei-Mensah's curatorial vision of "bridging cultural gaps". ARTNOIR has collaborated on a number of programs and initiatives with Open House New York, Moët Hennessy, Neuehouse, The NY Times, Random House, NYU, Wangechi Mutu, and Julie Mehretu just to name a few.
Ossei-Mensah currently serves as Co-Chair of Russell Simmons' RUSH Artist Advisory Board, a member of MoMA's Friends of Education and ICI's Independents.
Frances Richard has published three collections of poetry--Anarch. (Futurepoem, 2012), The Phonemes (Les Figues Press, 2012) and See Through (Four Way Books, 2003)--as well as the chapbooks Shaved Code (Portable Press at Yo-Yo Labs, 2008) and Anarch. (Woodland Editions, 2008). She writes frequently about contemporary art and is co-author, with Jeffrey Kastner and Sina Najafi, of Odd Lots: Revisiting Gordon Matta-Clark's "Fake Estates" (Cabinet Books, 2005). She has been a visiting scholar at the Canadian Centre for Architecture, and is the recipient of a Creative Capital/Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant, and a research grant from the Graham Foundation; currently she is editing two volumes of essays: Joan Jonas is on our mind (Wattis Institute, 2017), and an as-yet untitled publication considering site-specific works in the collection of The New School in New York City. She teaches at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco.
