About Dance Omi

Since 2005, the Dance Omi International Dance Collective has brought together ten accomplished dance artists from around the world for three weeks of creative exchange each summer. Though the program culminates in informal showings on the Omi campus, the emphasis is not a performance product; rather, a gently facilitated process of experimentation and collaboration.

This exploration is enhanced by providing resources that dancers and choreographers often lack: space, time and other artists with whom to work. Under the direction of the Dance Omi Director and an alumni Guest Mentor, residents learn from each other's creative process and the freedom to play. The result is a model of creative process and community building that envisions consequences for the participants beyond the sphere of art making.



Professional Dancers/Choreographers of ALL styles (Modern, Ballet, Improvisation, Ethnic Dance forms, etc.) who have the desire to share ideas and process with dancers from around the world are encouraged to apply. It is recommended that applicants do not have specific projects in mind, but come open to working with others on jointly conceived projects. It is imperative that all applicants have a genuine openness to collaborating with artists of different dance backgrounds.



All awarded fellows commit to remaining for the entire residency and to participating in the concluding showings. Everyone accepted to Dance Omi receives full room and board during his or her stay at Omi (note that Omi is unable to provide travel funds).

2017 Dance Residents


Khaled Barghouthi (Palestine)
was born in Ramallah, Palestine. He studied contemporary dance at the Royal Conservatory in Antwerp and is a prospective master student at NYU Tisch School of the Arts for 2017. Khaled started dancing at the age of nineteen after he was invited by the KVS in Belgium to take part in their summer workshops in Palestine. He received a scholarship to continue his dance studies in Belgium from the Belgian Development Agency, becoming the first Palestinian from the occupied territories to study dance with a group of internationally-known choreographers and dancers. In 2016, Khaled was awarded three productions awards by the British Council and Arts Council UK. He was also offered to be a resident choreographer and guest teacher at Lehamn College in New York. Khaled's research in dance is focused on the embodiment of the socio-political reality of space and how the performance space transforms once the audience's relationship to it is questioned. Khaled has worked with companies and choreographers such as Eastman, Damien Jalet, Koen Augustine, les ballet C de la B, CityDance Washington, DC, Willi Dorner and others. His dream is to start an academic dance program and dance company in Palestine.

 


Byb Chanel Bibene (Republic of the Congo)
is a choreographer and performer working in theater and contemporary dance. As Artistic Director of Kiandanda Dance Theater, his technical and aesthetic style is rooted in the culture and dances of his country of origin, the Republic of Congo. He has toured the world and performed internationally with companies and choreographers from Africa, Europe, and the United States. In Africa, Byb has trained with choreographers such as Serge Bissadissi, Orchy Nzaba, Salia Sanou, Julie Dossavie, Ni Tajo, Tangale. In Europe, he has worked with choreographers such as Paco Decina, Eric Lamoureux. In the United Staets, he has had the opportunity to work with choreographers such as Joanna Haigood, Paco Gomez, Reggie Wilson, Amara Tabor Smith, Shinichi Iova-Koga, Sherwood Chen. Outside of his dance career, Byb has a passion for writing. He is currently completing his MFA at Saint Mary's College.

 


Chloe Calderon Chotrani (Singapore/Phillipines)
is a dance artist, teacher, writer and arts manager based in Singapore/Asia. She works with the belief that our creative intelligence should be deeper integrated with society. Through a Dance Artist Scholarship with Romançon Dance, she completed her BA in Arts Management from De La Salle (Manila, 2012) and holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Asian Art from the School of Oriental and African Studies (London, 2014). She has worked with Legit Status Philippines (Manila/Las Vegas, 2010), B Supreme (London, 2014), Evidence Dance/Ronald K. Brown (New York, 2016), Movement Research (New York, 2017) and Gibney Dance Training (New York, 2017). Her recent performative work Talking Circles explores the inner bodily landscape of heritage and history. Chloe's movement is constantly based on a cyclic way of living and communicating. Talking Circles has expanded into a digital archive of artists from Southeast Asia as a form of research and ritual. Her enchantment with Southeast Asia as a cultural powerhouse is based on our Asian culture of collectivism. She believes that Asia holds a global model that promotes engagement instead of isolation and acts as a seed of hope for humanity. Chloe uses movement to question society. She is interested in how her skills a dance artist may permeate through her continuing interdisciplinary research on topics of eco-feminism, decolonisation and social justice as a Filipina culture bearer artist of the Diaspora. www.chloechotrani.com

 


Ayanna Clarke (United States)
is gender variant femme choreographer, performance artist, DJ, and pole dancer whose works explore the intersections of blackness, southern roots, trauma, healing, magic, gender, sexuality, liberation, and being both invisible/ hyper visible and the power in "ratchetness." Their primary dance modality is pole dancing, after a yearlong work study program at the pole and aerial studio Body & Pole. They are elEVATED certified, Liquid Motion Certified, and teach pole classes at Sweetwater Dance & Yoga. In addition, they have a monthly class specifically for queer + trans people of color. They have performed at Silent's Barn fundraiser for The Standing Rock Medic Council, Dixon Place's HOT! Festival, and BAAD's BAADASS Women. They also facilitate "Manifesting Through Movement" movement workshops so people can use their bodies as a tool to destroy white supremacy and to reclaim the inherent power that comes from being in our bodies.

 


Kai Hazelwood (United States)
Kai Hazelwood is a choreographer, performer and educator with over 25 years of experience. Her training includes a BFA in Dance from UCLA, 6 years at the San Francisco Ballet School, summer programs at Dance Theater of Harlem and Alvin Ailey, and training at the Kirov Ballet in Saint Petersburg, Russia. After a season with the Oakland Ballet Company, Kai relocated to Los Angeles to complete her degree at UCLA. She has been mentored by and worked with artists including, Victoria Marks and Christine Suarez. She has collaborated with performance artist Allison Wyper since 2010, touring the artist's piece "Witness" to festivals and art exhibitions in Los Angeles, Long Beach, San Francisco, Calgary, Alberta and Montreal, Quebec. Kai's choreographic work includes "Assemble" & "Exagoge" performed by Theatre Dybbuk, original works entitled "Color Outside the Lines" and "inVISIBLE". Kai left her 4 year post as faculty and dance outreach coordinator at AMDA College & Conservatory in 2016 to refocus on her artistic career beginning with a guest choreographer post with Martz Contemporary Dance Company in Barcelona Spain. Kai then went on to tour with Axis Dance Company before returning to Los Angeles to continue her own choreographic work and is thrilled to be selected as a 2017 Dance Omi International Dance Collective Resident.

 


Thomas Tyger Moore (United States)
was born in Washington D.C. and started his training in college. He graduated with a BFA in Dance Performance and BA in Mass Communications/ Journalism from Towson University in Baltimore, MD. He also studied on scholarship at the 2011 International Association of Blacks in Dance Conference and the 2010 and 2012 American Dance Festival.Thomas currently lives in Brooklyn, NY and dances with Of Bones, Hollye Bynum, Christopher K. Morgan & Artists, and VTDance. He has been a guest artist with Johnnie Mercer: The RED ProjectNYC, Campbell Dance Experience, S.J Ewing & Dancers, and apprenticed with Dissonance Dance Theatre. He has presented work at the Towson University Company Concert, Velocity Dance Festival, and Dance & Desert Showcase at American Dance Institute. He teaches modern at Maryland School of Dance and as adjunct or guest faculty for universities. Currently, Thomas is freelancing and preparing to attend graduate school for physical therapy.

 


Thea Patterson (Canada)
works on many projects as a choreographer, performer, and dramaturge. She was a member of the artist group The Choreographers who were in residence at Dance4 in the UK. Thea is a long time collaborator of Peter Trosztmer, with whom she was dramaturge on seven critically acclaimed works. Prior to this trend towards collaborative practices and dramaturgical work, Thea created 'Rhyming Couplets,' which was presented at Tangente, Montreal and the Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival. She also created 'A Soft Place to Fall' which was made into a BravoFACT film. Her 2013 solo work " the dance that i cannot do" explored a new interest in expanded choreographic ideologies and was presented at Maison de la culture Plateau Mont Royal, at Movement Research/The Judson Church, in New York, and at The F OFF (microfest) and The Third Floor Series. She is Artist in Residence at Techno- Lyth in Griffintown Montreal. She also co-produced and co-curated the F Off (microfest) during the Festival Transamerique. In 2016, Thea completed her Masters at The Graduate School. She is currently touring her solo entitled "between this is and the could be" and is working collaboratively on a several projects in Montreal, Portugal and Amsterdam.

 


Lynne Price (United States)
holds an MFA in Dance from the University of Maryland, College Park. As an interdisciplinary artist, Lynne's practices include dance, poetry, improvisation, performance, choreography, somatics, and research in many fields including gender, race, and depth psychology and archetypes. Lynne has taught at University of Maryland, UMBC, Goucher College and is currently a Visiting Instructor of Dance/Movement at St Mary's College of Maryland. Lynne teaches movement research classes at a church in Baltimore to movers of all levels. Lynne founded an unofficial, volunteer organization called Baltimore Independent Dance Artists (BIDA)—borrowing with permission the loose structure of the Durham-based group DIDA—with the mission of elevating and bringing together the dance community in Baltimore. BIDA is currently in its first season. Lynne often collaborates with choreographers and dancers in Baltimore and DC. Lynne is part of a collaborative group whose project was just accepted for the O, Miami Festival in 2017.

 


Anna Seymour (Australia)
is a Melbourne-based contemporary dancer who was born profoundly Deaf. She received her Bachelor of Creative Arts in Dance from Deakin University in 2012. She has worked for various companies and choreographers, including Ballet Lab and KAGE. Anna co-founded The Delta Project in 2012 (productions include Collisions and Under My Skin) a dance company employing Deaf and hearing dancers. In 2016, Anna presented her first choreographic work Distraction Society for the Melbourne Fringe Festival and worked as an actress for Deafferent Theatre (Black is the Colour) which earned her a Green Room Award nomination for Best Performer in Independent Theatre. With a focus on inclusive dance practice, she teaches dance workshops for Deaf and hearing young people and those with mild intellectual disabilities. She collaborates with a range of artists, including a mural painted by Guido van Helten on a 7-story high building in Melbourne that explored people's connection to architecture and space. In 2017, Anna will perform in the world premiere of Out of Earshot with KAGE in June. Afterwards, she is excited to explore and expand her dance practice at the OMI dance residency in New York.

 


Julien Touati (France)
is a training comedian who discovered Kathakali in 2004 and spent four years training at Kottakkal in India. In 2009, he felt the need to merge this unique training experience with contemporary stage forms. He created AVS Road Company which performed works like "And I want," "Anywhere I lay my head," and "The book of love." In 2010, he co-directed the film "The Table With the Dogs" which won the Immaterial Cultural Heritage Award at Festival Jean Rouch. It was also selected and awarded at several other international festivals. As a performer, Julien has worked with companies like Prana, theater performances like "Femme Non-Rééducable," and films directed by Maria Pinto. He has also danced with choreographer Alban Richard in France. Most recently, he joined the Song of the Goat Theatre in Poland for his creation "Crazy God," inspired by the classic Shakespeare play Hamlet.

 


Anuradha Venkataraman (India)
has received training in Bharatanatyam from Guru Saroja Vaidyanathan at Ganesa Natyalaya. Being an empaneled artiste of ICCR and 'A' grade artist of Delhi Doordarshan, she has been dancing professionally for the past twenty years. She has performed extensively in India and abroad in major festivals. In addition, she has choreographed four full length productions, including "Pratham Parth," "Jananyey Namah," "Vaidehi," and "Stories Unearthed." These productions have taken place in both theaters and as site specific works. Her choreography has received praise from audiences and critics alike. Under her organization Ahum, she runs the Swastika School of Dance and Music where fifty children currently receive training from her.

 


Neus Gil Cortes (Spain / United Kingdom)
is an alum from OMI 2015. Neus is a Spanish choreographer and dramaturg based in London. She holds a BA in Art History, specializing in contemporary art and philosophy of art. Presently, she is doing freelance work. She previously danced for Hofesh Shechter Company, National Dance Company Wales and Dance Works Rotterdam. Her work has been commissioned across the globe, including places like Holland, United Kingdom, and Spain. Neus regularly teaches professional dancers in London at Greenwich Dance, Trip Space, and Trinity Laban Conservatorie. In addition, she also instructs students from the Rotterdam Dance Academy in Holland. She is currently collaborating with two other choreographers for the triple bill "Organic Entity." This project has been awarded the East London Dance Ideas Enterprise Fund as well as a grant from Arts Council of England. Neus' recent artistic research mainly focuses on two areas: the expressive capacity of the human body and the integration of contrasting art forms.

 


Christopher K. Morgan (Dance Omi Program Director)
has directed Dance Omi since 2006. He is also the Artistic Director of contemporary dance company Christopher K. Morgan & Artists (CKM&A), and The Dance Artist in Residence in the School of Theatre, Dance and Performance Studies at the University of Maryland. His Native Hawaiian ancestry and a diverse, international modern dance career that moved him to Munich, Washington DC, New York, Dublin and London, all influence his choreography. Said to be "charming and poignant" by The New York Times, his work has been presented in 18 countries on 5 continents and has addressed issues including sexuality, gender identity, race, climate change, and water conservation. Christopher founded CKM&A in 2011; the same year Dance Magazine profiled him as one of six breakout choreographers in the United States. He has adjudicated for the American College Dance Festival and served on panels for the National Endowment for the Arts, Maryland State Arts Council and McKnight Foundation among others. Recent awards include a 2013 Native Arts & Cultures Foundation Fellowship, 2014 NPN Creation Fund Award, a 2014 National Dance Project (NDP) Production Grant from NEFA, being named one of the top 100 Creatives in the United States by Origin Magazine in 2015, the 2015 Montgomery County Executive's Award for Outstanding Artist and a 2017 Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award for Solo Dance Performance.

In May 2017 Christopher was selected to become the new Executive Artistic Director of Dance Place, a 37-year-old dance institution in Washington, D.C. This role will allow Christopher to deepen and expand the ways in which he serves communities, artists and the field at large as he oversees the curation of 45 weekends of performances by national and international choreographers annually, a school for youth and adults, youth enrichment programs and continues Dance Place's leadership in creative placemaking in the United States. He resides in North Bethesda, Maryland with his husband, opera director Kyle Lang.

The Studio Barns: intersection of County Route 22 + Letter S Road, Ghent, NY


The annual Dance Salon is a forum for the Art Omi: Dance residents to share their individual work with the public before exhibiting their collaborative projects on August 5 at the Final Showing.

The Salon offers an intimate evening of live performance by dancers from around the world, set in the studio spaces, and gives context to individual artist's work at the start of the residency program.

The event is free and open to the public, with no RSVP required.

The Fields Sculpture Park


Art Omi: Dance Residents show works created in collaboration with each other during their stay. The residency emphasizes process over product, so the artists will present the fruits of their exchange in the form of unique pieces. Each year's iteration varies, but almost always involve site-specific performance events leading hundreds of visitors throughout Art Omi's beautiful sculpture park.


Free and open to the public.

About Dance Omi

Dance Omi is a unique opportunity for a collection of international dance artists to explore the process of collaboration through dance. The Residency consists of three weeks of artistic process and sharing. Uninterrupted by the constraints of lack of space, time, or other artists with whom to work, the richness of this residency is that it is an exploration. Residents are encouraged to collaborate with each other, without the pressure of having to create a performance product. It is a model for artistic process and international community building.

 

Who Should Apply

Applicants active as both dancers AND choreographers, who work within any style of dance, are encouraged to apply. It is recommended that applicants do not come with specific projects in mind, but that they are open to working with others on jointly conceived projects. Applicants must have a genuine openness to collaborating with multi-national artists of diverse cultural, socio-political, linguistic and dance backgrounds.

 

All awarded fellows must commit to staying for the entire residency and receive full room and board during their stay at Omi. Please note that Dance Omi is unable to provide travel funds.

In order to apply, you will need to:

  1. Fill in your contact information.
  2. Submit a statement on what working collectively means to you and how you feel you can contribute to the collective experience (no more than 200 words).
  3. Upload a headshot photo (jpg format). 4. Fill in a resume form that asks for choreographic works and presentations, performance experience, education, languages spoken and additional dance related experience.
  4. Upload one letter of recommendation from an established professional in the dance field relative to your career progress and/or your collaborative experience (Maximum 2 pages, acceptable upload formats: .doc, .docx, .pdf).
  5. Upload or attach links* for two, but no more than three representative samples of your work as a performer, improviser, and/or choreographer. Acceptable formats for uploading your video samples are: .mov, .mp4, .wmv, .avi. Your uploaded video should not exceed 50MB and each excerpt should be no longer than three minutes. The applicant MUST appear in at least one of the samples. It is suggested, but not required, that one of the submitted work samples be an in studio improvisation or rehearsal footage of the applicant artist.

Accommodations

 

Omi International Arts Center is located two and a half hours north of New York City in the historic Hudson River Valley. Named for a neighboring village, Omi is close to the small town of Ghent, New York, as well as Albany and Hudson, which offer train connections only thirty minutes away.

The facilities, situated on three hundred acres of open land, include a large two-story barn with indoor studios; contemporary residence buildings designed with a vernacular reference to local barns, surrounded by abundant perennial beds, expansive lawns dotted with fruit trees, adjacent to The Fields Sculpture Park.

A Federal Period farm house serves as a gathering center, providing a full kitchen, television room and library; while the front porch overlooks rolling hills and the majestic outline of the Catskill Range. A swimming pool, bicycles, WiFi access and several state of the art computers are available on the premises.

Columbia County, and the nearby Berkshire Mountains, are popular destinations because of their historical, natural and cultural riches. From bird sanctuaries to modern dance, presidential mansions to farmer's markets, the environs offer a singular blend of rural quiet and cultural stimulation. Staff and friends in the neighborhood are often available for excursions of interest to residents. The local library has a modest collection, but is a member of the Mid-Hudson group, calling on the resources of libraries within much of eastern New York.
